    Xbox Windows Sonic/Dolby Atmos for Headphones to Receiver via HDMI


    When either Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for Headphones is selected and headphone audio is output via HDMI or optical (i.e. box is checked in settings
    menu), my receiver still shows that it is receiving the same HDMI audio type before the virtual surround headphone processing was selected.

    For example, if HDMI audio is set to 5.1 uncompressed and I select Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for Headphones, the HDMI and optical audio selections are grayed out as Headphone format but my receiver still shows
    5.1 PCM as the input audio signal.

    If I back out of Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for Headphones and change the HDMI audio out, when I activate Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for Headphones again my receiver reports whatever
    the HDMI audio selection is as the audio input signal. For example, if HDMI audio is set to Bitstream (Dolby Digital), my receiver reports Dolby Digital 5.1 as the audio input signal. If HDMI audio is set to 7.1 Uncompressed, my receiver reports 7.1 PCM as
    the audio input signal. If HDMI audio is set to Stereo Uncompressed, my receiver reports 2.0 PCM as the audio input signal.

    I was assuming that the Headphone audio format would be a 2 channel PCM signal with virtual surround processing encoded in the two channels, and therefore the audio sent to my receiver
    would always be 2 channel PCM.

    What are the correct settings for outputting the virtual surround modes for Headset audio over HDMI?

    When you go to the settings under Display&Sound, do you have the console set up to also play game sound through the headphones? If so, do you use any spatial surround modes like Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos for headphones?

    If you set it to Dolby Atmos for Headphones, did you actually purchase Dolby Atmos for headphones? If not, you could only try Dolby Atmos for headphones for two weeks. So check the settings if the headphones work with Stereo or Windows Sonic.

    How to Get FreeSync and ATMOS at the same time from XBOX ONE X

    I understand your frustration, but the issue is not with Xbox directly, but with Yamaha and Samsung not supporting FreeSync or ARC properly.

    From my experience, no Samsung TV ever gave a proper ARC signal from other HDMI input signals. Only from it's internal tuner (be it live TV or Samsung internal apps), where the TV is producing the sound, and sending it to the TV, which annoys us when using
    our FireTV stick on our Samsung TV.

    If the TV gets the sound from a different HDMI input, it's unable to directly forward that audio through it's ARC port. I don't know if it's a technical limitation or licensing issues that prohibit Samsung from sending the original Bitstram via eARC.

    On the other hand: You might have to contact Yamaha, so they can implement FreeSync support in their next generation of receivers, or maybe are able to have a firmware update for your existing receiver.

    As a workaround, you can also try the following:

    Plug in a headphone into your controller, and then in the Display & Audio settings enable Windows Sonic for headphones, or if you have purchased the Dolby Atmos for headphones app, you can also use Dolby Atmos.

    This will enable spatial surround through your headphones, and you can then enjoy Freesynced refresh rates WHILE enjoying spatial 3D surround sound.

    If you're unsure about the capabilities of Windows Sonic compared to Dolby Atmos for headphones, the Dolby Atmos Access app gives you a 14 day trial. So you can directly compare Dolby Atmos with Windows Sonic, and decide if there is an audible difference
    that warrants the purchase of Dolby Atmos for headphones.

    Alternatively, if you don't have a nice pair of headphones yet, you could kill two birds with one stone, and buy yourself a Plantronics RIG headset, that has a redeemable code for Dolby Atmos (take care, as there are some models that are being sold WITHOUT
    the code for Dolby Atmos as well). Personally, I am pleased with the Plantronics RIG 400HX Atmos.

    Audio Issue regarding Razer headsets

    Can you try plugging the Razer into a "normal" audio device like a MP3 player or your smartphone and play music through the headset?

    Does that work?

    If that works, try to plug the headset into a different controller if you have one.

    In the console settings, go to "Display & Sound" and in the audio settings, make sure that audio output through headphones is selected. Also make sure, that you have selected "Stereo" or "Windows Sonic" as sound output, unless you have actually paid money
    in the Dolby Atmos app.

    If you just downloaded the Dolby Atmos App, and didn't pay them for Dolby Atmos for Headphones, the audio output will stop working after 14 days.

    You can then either purchase Dolby Atmos for Headphones, or switch to Windows Sonic, which does basically the same: giving you spatial 3D surround sound via headphones. For free.

    Using earphones on a wireless remote

    Check that you have fresh batteries in the controller, as the controller turns off some features when the batteries get low to conserve battery power like rumble and headphone sound.

    Also, can you go to the Settings under Display & Sound and check the settings there. If you have set the headset audio to "Dolby Atmos for Headphones", be aware that you need to have PURCHASED the Dolby Atmos for Headphones app.

    If you simply downloaded the Dolby Atmos app for free, you only get a 14 day trial of Dolby Atmos for Headphones. After 14 days, Dolby Atmos for Headphones stops working.

    You can switch to "Windows Sonic for Headphones" to get the same spatial surround sound effect "for free".
